The body is not made up of one member, but of many. If the foot said: Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; would it not, however, be of the body? And if the ear said: Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; would it not, however, be of the body? If the whole body was an eye, where would the hearing be? If he were all hearing, where would the sense of smell be?
But now God has placed every member in the body as he willed. And if they were all just one member, where would the body be? But now there are many members, and one body. And the eye cannot say to the hand: I don't need you; nor yet head to toe: I don't need you.
